There are now rumors that a new movie based on L. Frank Baum's original fairytale is planned for 2011. Although no one is using the word "remake" of course it will probably have many similarities to the original Wizard of Oz. If the new movie has the same great  Oz costumes and acting, it will most likely garner great success at the box office just like the original did in 1939. Having millions of true fans already is a huge advantage for any new movie. So even if the modern version turns out to be just a mediocre film, the production houses will probably profit.
