Mary William Ethelbert Appleton "Billie" Burke (August 7, 1884 – May 14, 1970) was the actress who played Glinda in the Wizard of Oz. When you think about it, Glinda is responsible for sending Dorothy on her big adventure down the yellow brick road in the first place, and Glinda is equally responsible for Dorothy eventually getting back to Kansas. First, Glinda makes the dead Wicked Witch of the East's ruby slippers appear on Dorothy's feet so that the Wicked Witch of the West cannot harm her. When Dorothy expresses her wish to return home to Kansas, Glinda and the Munchkins tell her she first needs to follow the yellow-brick road, which leads to Emerald City, where they will meet the Wizard of Oz. Toward the end of the movie, when it appears as if Dorothy will never get back home, Glinda the Good Witch of the North tells Dorothy that she and Toto had the power to return home all along, but that she had to learn for herself that true happiness lies in her own backyard. Glinda then instructs Dorothy to to tap her heels together three times and repeat the words, "There's no place like home."
