Ray Bolger first appears in the Wizard of Oz as Hunk, one of three farm hands employed by Mr. and Mrs. Gale, Dorothy aunt and uncle. The actor later appears in the movie in a Scarecrow costume and meets Dorothy on her way to see the Wizard. The scarecrow's fondest wish is to have a brain instead of a bunch of straw. Dorothy assures him that the Great and Mighty Wizard is going to help her get home to Kansas, so surely Oz can give a brain to the scarecrow while he's granting wishes. Before the group gets to Emerald City, the scarecrow must battle his fear of fire and join forces with the Cowardly Lion and the Tin Man to fight the Wicked Witch and Flying Monkeys and rescue Dorothy and Toto. After arriving at Oz, the generous Wizard gives a diploma to the scarecrow who now has proof that he has a brain.
